Legendary Career of Ballaghmor Class

The legendary grey gelding Ballaghmor Class, affectionately known as “Thomas”, is set to receive a heartfelt retirement ceremony at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials this September. Fans will have a chance to celebrate one of the greatest CCI5* horses of the modern era in the Main Arena on Sunday, 6 September.

Partnership with Oliver Townend

Ridden by British rider Oliver Townend, Ballaghmor Class achieved remarkable success. Together, they secured four five-star victories, including Burghley wins in 2017 and 2023, as well as triumphs at Kentucky in 2021 and Maryland in 2024. The pair also contributed to Great Britain’s team gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Breeding and Achievements

Bred in Ireland by Noel Hickey, Ballaghmor Class is by Courage II out of an I’m A Star mare. Over his career, he finished in the top five at CCI5* events 11 times, earning a reputation for consistency, strength, and exceptional talent.

Townend’s Tribute to Thomas

Oliver Townend described Thomas as a “horse of a lifetime”, proud that the champion is retiring while still fit and healthy. He recalled their first Burghley win in 2017 as a 10-year-old and the incredible return six years later to claim victory again.

 A Special Place: Burghley

For Townend, the owners, and fans, Burghley holds a special place in Thomas’s journey. The retirement ceremony will allow supporters to celebrate the horse who delivered some of the most memorable moments in eventing history.
