About Pigeon Fever

Pigeon fever is a bacterial infection affecting horses and cattle. It typically causes large abscesses, often on the chest or under the belly. Infection occurs when bacteria enter through broken skin, such as small scrapes or wounds. Peak infection season is late summer through fall.

Prevention and Horse Health Practices

Good horse health and management practices can help prevent pigeon fever:

  • Fly control: Reduce flies that can spread bacteria.
  • Avoid sharing water buckets or equipment: Prevents cross-contamination.
  • Avoid high-traffic tie areas: Reduces contact with contaminated surfaces.

If a horse shows signs of pigeon fever, such as abscesses or swelling, owners should contact a veterinarian immediately. Early detection improves recovery and reduces the risk of spreading the infection.
