New Study on Horse Health

A new research project is exploring a simple way to detect horse health problems earlier. The study is a partnership between Formartine Bio and the University of the West of Scotland. Researchers want to use saliva testing to monitor horse health in an easier and safer way.

Simple and Stress-Free Testing

The research focuses on saliva samples from horses. Scientists believe saliva can show early signs of health issues. These signs may include inflammation, metabolic stress, immune response, or injury.

Saliva testing is quick and non-invasive. It also causes less stress for horses compared to traditional testing methods.

Helping Prevent Serious Diseases

Many horses in the UK are overweight. This increases the risk of diseases such as Laminitis and Equine Metabolic Syndrome. Early detection could help owners manage these problems before they become serious.

Scientists Behind the Project

The project is led by Dr Kimberley Mackenzie from Formartine Bio. She is working with Dr Mia Burleigh and Dr Gary Litherland from the University of the West of Scotland.

The research studies glycans, which are sugar molecules linked to immune function and overall health.

A Better Future for Horse Care

If successful, the research could change how horse health is monitored. Saliva testing may help owners and vets detect problems earlier. This could improve treatment and protect horse welfare.
