Hawthorne Race Course Bankruptcy Case: Hope from the Court, but No Final Decision Yet
Hawthorne Race Course, located near Chicago, was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to a severe financial crisis. The move came after its bank, Signature Bank, froze the track’s accounts.
Account Freeze Causes Financial Losses for Horsemen
After the accounts were frozen, checks issued to horsemen (owners and trainers) were returned unpaid. This situation created significant uncertainty and concern within the racing community, as many were waiting for their overdue payments.
License Suspension Adds to Growing Challenges
Following the financial disruption, the Illinois Racing Board temporarily suspended the license of Hawthorne’s harness racing entity, Suburban Downs. If the issue is not resolved quickly, the track risks losing its racing license and its long-held right to open a future racino.
Court Hearing: Judge Offers Words of Encouragement
The initial hearing was held on March 3, where Judge Timothy Barnes reviewed the case. Although no immediate approvals were granted, the judge acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and expressed understanding of the horsemen’s concerns.
He prioritized employee payroll and scheduled a follow-up hearing to address salary approvals.
$16 Million Interim Financing Plan
Hawthorne management informed the court that $16 million in interim financing has been arranged. The purpose of this funding is to maintain operations, pay employees, and clear outstanding dues owed to horsemen.
Horsemen’s Participation Depends on Court Decision
Hawthorne CEO Tim Carey stated in court that horsemen will not return to race unless they are fully paid. Many owners and trainers are currently waiting for the court’s next decision before deciding whether to ship their horses to the track.
All Eyes on the Next Hearing
The judge has scheduled another hearing for March 10 to review payments to horsemen and other financial approvals. The racing community is now closely watching that date, as the outcome could determine the future of racing at Hawthorne.
